2022: Where It All Began

It all started with Google Research and the introduction of DreamFusion. This model utilized NeRF (Neural Radiance Fields) and Stable Diffusion to bridge the gap between text and 3D. It is worth keeping Stable Diffusion in mind, as its underlying principles remain central to the industry even today.

By 2023, the pace of development accelerated rapidly. NVIDIA entered the arena with its own breakthroughs, and other tech giants quickly followed suit, turning 3D generation into a high-stakes competitive field.

The 2024 Breakthroughs

When Stability AI released Stable Video, the world took notice. They achieved a remarkable balance between quality and processing time, causing their popularity on Hugging Face to skyrocket.

While I was developing my Udemy course on ARKit, I built a sample app that allowed users to input a prompt like "green apple." The AI would first produce a 2D image, which was then processed by Stable Fast 3D. I was blown away by the speed; the entire pipeline—from the user’s text prompt to receiving a ready-to-use GLB file—took only about 30 seconds. This level of efficiency made real-time AR generation finally feel viable.

The Landscape in 2026

By 2025, global attention shifted toward Asian tech leaders, fueled in part by the massive success of the DeepSeek LLM. Following that momentum, Tencent released Hunyuan3D 2.0.

When I first started testing it, I was stunned by the geometric precision and the level of texture detail in the generated models. It represents a significant leap forward in how much information can be extracted from a single 2D reference.

The Verdict

Currently, I believe Hunyuan3D 2.0 is the gold standard. While it may not be the absolute fastest model on the market, the professional-grade results and high-fidelity meshes it delivers are unmatched for high-end AR experiences.
